The Active School Flag (ASF) initiative is a Department of Education and Skills initiative (DES) supported by Healthy Ireland (HI) which aims to get more schools, more active, more often. It is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community.
We were awarded our first Active flag last year and are continuing to encourage physical activity amongst our students.
We are partnered with the County Board, and the children love when our local GAA coach Mr Cooper visits. They practice fundamental movement skills, GAA skills and play matches.
We take active movement breaks throughout the day, including everything from our Run Around Ireland, GoNoodle dances, Cosmic Yoga and 10@10.
The children changed the words of the popular Christmas song "Twelve Days of Christmas" created fantastic 12 Days of Fitmas exercises to boost our fitness levels before Christmas.
We are taking part in the Fit4Class programme which aims to develop fitness whilst enhancing children's agility, balance and co-ordination.
We celebrate Active Week each year. Everybody wears their tracksuits, staff too! Active homework replaces written work and time is set aside each day for physical activity. Each Active Week, a full day is dedicated to PE and fun activities.
We also take part in the European School Sports Day.
