Two Mile Community National School opened in September 2017 under patronage of the Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB). It was the first Community National under KETB patronage i.e. a primary school with a local Education and Training Board as it’s patron.
History
Our school has a rich heritage, beginning with Scoil Ceathrú Riabhach / Cahooreigh National School in 1840, known locally as Two Mile School. This school was a one room structure, measuring 50 x 20 feet and 11.5 feet high; which at the time cost £156 2s 2d. The local community contributed £52 of this, which is remarkable considering what little people had at the time. There are records of a yearly rent of 1 penny, payable (unclear as to whom) on the Feast of St. Michael. This original structure was built a little away from our current building, and unfortunately has not survived.
In September 1849, there were 49 boys and 13 girls on the roll. John McGillicuddy was the teacher, a former Hedgeschool master. He retired in 1862.
In 1944, a replacement building with two classrooms was provided. This still exists, and is now our school Halla/general purpose room. In 1980, as enrolments increased, a prefab was donated by Kerry Vocational Education Committee.
In 1985, the school was extended to include three additional classrooms and ancillary rooms, which replaced the prefab. These buildings are now our resource room and classrooms.
In 2017, the school transferred to the patronage of Kerry Education and Training Board, to become the first Community National School in Kerry.
In 2019, major refurbishment works were carried out on Two Mile CNS.
Throughout the history of Two Mile, in all of its iterations, the community has been at the heart of the school.
